One of Amnesty International’s free speech campaigns is irrepressible.info. It is a great initative to pass on censored thoughts and ideas from states with strong media control. Censored ideas like:
Aung San Suu Kyi’s message is a simple one - that only by fighting fear can you truly be free#
Written by http://burmacampaign.org.uk/, The Burma Campaign UK, a pro-democracy human rights group which has been censored in Myanmar/Burma. A feed of this censored material and others including China, Burma, and Iran will be placed along the right hand panel.
Irrepressible.info is hosting a webcast on Wednesday (June 6th) entitled: “Some People Think the Internet is a Bad Thing: The Struggle for Freedom of Expression in Cyberspace”. It can be found at http://www.amnesty.org.uk/webcast, starting at 18:30 UK, 19:30 Europe, 13:30 EST and 10:30 PST.
This is what my invitation says of the event:
Speakers include victims of Internet repression from around the world; Internet entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox; Josh Wolf, jailed US blogger; Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia; Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software movement; Cory Doctorow from BoingBoing; and Kevin Anderson, head of blogging at The Guardian.
But…we need you (and people like you) to contribute!
The event is going to be webcast live at 18:30 UK time on Wednesday, 6 June. In addition to live speeches, it will involve podcasts and vodcasts from supporters unable to attend on the night and questions and other contributions emailed from bloggers and other passionate web-users, like ourselves, all over the world. Please tune in and contribute and tell everyone you know who’d be interested to do the same!
I’m probably going to login, just for the girls, but it should be interesting.
