CNet News reports that Hugo Chavez has been curious about creating his own One Laptop Per Child spin-off and giving it to the students of South America. Great idea, but why not stick with the already developed OLPC computer? He may be less keen, however, when he learns that RCTV has become a YouTube channel.
Hat Tip to Mark Wells whose links to balanced views on the situation in Venezuela where the ever controversial leader revoked the public television license of critical television station RCTV. I was particularly interested in this OhMyNews piece, which, when every other news source seems to be running for their ideological corner, it remains balanced:
But one must look for the true reasons behind this highly unpopular closure, one that made headlines throughout the world and, once again, advertised Chavez as a constant violator of constitutional rights — or dictator, for the radicals. These reasons trace back to the military coup of 2002 — which is attributed by some to the U.S. — but they also involve the current covering of the issue by the media, as well as governmental and anti-governmental interests in Venezuela. A usual, both sides have more at stake in this issue than just “protecting the Venezuelan people” or “defending freedom of speech,” and neither side is innocent.
As usual the British comedic commentary saw light of the incident, when “Have I Got News For You” noted the irony of Arsey-TV getting punished for it’s opposition to the government.
