Whenever Michael Ware’s warped face appears on my TV screen I can palpably feel a breath of fresh air blow from the screen and wash over me. When Ware speaks in his somehow reassuring ‘Stalin, I get the impression that the bullshit has stopped with the journalist asking the timid question. When Ware answers he sounds like a typical Aussie iconoclast right ready to ruffle some feather.

Take yesterday, for instance. Anderson Cooper got Ware out of bed at 4 in the morning to have him watch a video of the remarkable and deranged Joe Lieberman explain how the US was winning the war in Iraq. “So,” asked Cooper, “is the enemy on the run in Iraq, Michael?”

The sneering laugh that preceded Ware’s response was all we needed to know. “No, certainly not and I think we should be aware it’s enemies — America doesn’t face just one enemy in this country but a whole multitude many of whom have become stronger the longer the American occupation continues. Senator Lieberman has taken an excursion into fantasy.”
