Well said; Facebook is the new AOL (in the early days), and Google is the new Microsoft. MSFT would benefit more if they only stick to what they know and do best, and leave the Internet search stuff to Google.

My point was not a direct comparison between AOL and Facebook but a conceptual one. AOL and Facebook each bridged the gap between the hi-tech geek internet and the Joe-everyone consumer. I use Facebook and enjoy it, but agree that AOL was rubbish. In terms of quality of product, you are certainly correct.

I can't see Open Social working without assisting and incorporating OpenID. It will be best for the whole internet community.

How Google will involve itself will be interesting. I have a feeling that soon Google will hide from the project as they'll start getting backlash. This backlash would endanger the whole programme's reputation. It is important the OpenSocial is, indeed, "Open" and not a spin-off of the gEmpire.

Facebook is the new AOL? hardly. They aren't sending out junk mail like every other day, in fact they don't even really advertise, that is the genius behind moguls like google, facebook, and social networking sites. It will be interesting to se where openID and open social go. What do you guys think about myopen id vs. open id?

penny for your thoughts.

Although the Facebook gazillion dollar valuation is quite laughable, I agree totally that portability will be the future, not places. While Facebook is fun today and the opening up of it's technology to create some good apps (branded or otherwise) has made its appeal more enduring, it's still in effect another country to my work email, home email, Linked In, other contacts, other places etc. Being able to harmonise and transport that fluidly would be [insert appropriate superlative here.] Better go check out Open Social...

I know that it probably sounds awfully pessimistic, but if the MS-FB deal is an equivalent of AOL-Time Warner, it's time to start selling the technology stocks. This is the first sign of bubble... :)
