Remembering Islamic Spain

Talk about a candle in the wind. Spain for the 500 years to about when Christopher Columbus walked away from the Alhambra across the vega to Seville then on to North America, was the brilliance of the world.

This article in the Christian Science Monitor entitled Islamic Spain: history’s refrain reminds us of the glories of that era: “Islamic Spain lasted longer than the Roman Empire. It marked a period and a place where for hundreds of years a relative religious tolerance prevailed in medieval Europe.”

Sure, it turned out badly, but in its heyday Spain was the very symbol of tolerance, progress, creativity, imagination and discovery, and it was mainly Islamic.

We can learn from yesterday.
