The Israel Lobby: is it the The Deadliest Lies?

That the Israel Lobby, through the neocons, talked the US into war with Iraq and is trying very hard to talk the US into war with Iran seems a no-brainer.

I watched Bibi Netanyahu, sitting with the preposterous Glenn Beck a few months ago, declare that Iran was months away from having a nuclear bomb and must be stopped. Together, the two thought it wholly rational that the US should get after them tout suite. The conversation was surreal in its accumulative inanities and chicanery. Like Iraq, the UN inspections should be suspended and ignored to let loose the dogs of war. Iraq taught them nothing about Iran.

John Mearsheimer, a professor at the University of Chicago, and Steven Walt, a professor at Harvard wrote first a report and executive summary about the Israel Lobby and more recently a book of the same name. To prove how radioactive the subject of the Israel lobby is in the US, they couldn’t get the article/summary published in that country but succeeded in the London Review of Books. Their argument hit the headlines, hit a nerve and hit the spot, giving amplification to what many hold to be an absolute truth.

Predictably, the big guns of the lobby turned their turrets on the two. And that has happened with the book, too.

Here is an interesting exchange on PBS Books Examine Israel Lobby between Mearsheimer and Abraham Foxman, who wrote a rebuttal to their book called The Deadliest Lies.

The Israelis have a vested interest in the Middle East that compels them to actions that aren’t in the interests of the United States. Why can’t that be understood by all?

And why can’t it be understood that just as with all interest groups, from coal and oil to guns and butter, it is wise for that vested interest to tap into American decision-making through the well-worn and legal path of payola lobby?

But isn’t it prudent to ask, one in awhile: are our actions in our interests? Mearsheimer and Walt are doing that.

  2. Here is another review of the same book reaching a different conclusion.

It seems to me that this book can be read according to the predisposition one holds about the issue. It may either reinforce your believe in the “almightyness” of the Israeli lobby, or reinforce a sense that this is yet another conspiracy theory spin.

  3. No one talked the US into invading Iraq. Bush was determined to do so from the beginning. Israel is more concerned about Iran, which has declared that Israel has no right to exist. There is no all powerful lobby talking the US into taking certain actions, even if you wish there was one to blame.
