Baseball: unwatchable inequities

The Colorado Rockies will trot onto the field tonight representing a total payroll of $54. The Boston Red Socks line up with a $143 million.

Put another way, the Rockies shortstop makes $381,000; the Sock’s shortstop fields $8.25.

When baseball starts a new season in the spring the vast majority of teams will have absolutely no chance of making the playoffs.

For Toronto to compete in its division it has to face the Socks at $143 and the New York Yankees at $207.

Sorry. In baseball, I can’t get by the economics. It isn’t sport, it’s … well, I don’t know what it is but the playing field is anything but level.

The story: Battle of baseball beliefs.
