Honour Killings are hate crimes

The incomprehensible deaths in Kingston, Ontario appear to be so-called ‘honour killings’ where family members apply their own brand of justice to wayward daughters/sisters. Remarkably, in a segment of the Muslim community, these sorts of acts appear to be justifiable, although the wholesale slaughter in this case may be a little much.

But it is a way too much in this country. It’s about time that our Criminal Code sends a message to these deranged males that this level of intolerance is intolerable. ‘Honour killings’ must be treated and punished as hate crimes, a tag that may add an additional level of condemnation and an extra length of incarceration than the mere act of murder.

How much of this is simmering beneath the surface?
