Big Pharma in hand-to-hand combat?

A preposterous White House deal with Big Pharma arrived at secretly in June bars the government from negotiating decreased drug prices (based on economies of scale), extends patent protections for drugs and blocks re-importing cheaper drugs from Canada (which has negotiated decreased prices based on economies of scale).

That deal, believed to be a White House ploy to get the drug industry on-side with health care reform, may be in jeopardy because Big Pharma hasn’t lived up to its end of the bargain, and a bargain it was.

“It’s the deal that has no name,” Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) told HuffPost Wednesday. “It’s been sort of a mystery to see how this is a sort-of-deal that no one acknowledges, yet everyone honors. So I’m hoping that we can get a more profound contribution [from PhRMA].”

Huffington Post tries to unravel this secret deal in Big Pharma Ready For “Hand To Hand Combat.”
