The ‘no fast’ cholesterol test

It lies there on your dresser like a pennant warning you of your mortality … and you do nothing with it as it yellows with age.

It’s the lab form for your cholesterol blood test, the one that says you can’t eat or drink for 12 hours before the needle. I know a guy who had one on his dresser for 18 months!

Good news. Patients do not need to fast before having their cholesterol tested, a major report has found.

It was thought the body needed time to remove fatty particles from the blood. Not so. Results are just as accurate if the patient has eaten just before the test.

The report didn’t mention anything about alcohol so for many the good news isn’t great. The form may still lie there yellowing with age … but, hey, it’s a step in the right direction.

Now, if they’d just make those statins just a bit better and put it in our drinking water supply we may never need the form to begin with. Now, THAT would be progress.
