All detainees transferred by Canadians to Afghan prisons were likely tortured by Afghan officials and many of the prisoners were innocent, says a former senior diplomat with Canada’s mission in Afghanistan.

(REUTERS/Chris Wattie)Appearing before a House of Commons committee Wednesday, Richard Colvin blasted the detainees policies of Canada and compared them with the policies of the British and the Netherlands.
The detainees were captured by Canadian soldiers then handed over to the Afghan intelligence service, called the NDS.
Colvin said Canada was taking six times as many detainees as British troops and 20 times as many as the Dutch.
That’s from a CBC news account: All Afghan Detainees Likely Tortured: Diplomat
In fact, on the CBC News Roundtable tonight the three panelists agreed that Canada stopped this practise in 2006 but the Canadian Government cannot admit to that without tacitly admitting to the accuracy of the torture claims. So, as governments do, this one is shooting the messenger, a messenger it had promoted and moved to a a cherished job in Washington, DC.
The Opposition is calling for an inquiry to determined the truth of the allegations, which it isn’t going to get. But, surely, there is more to come.
This is disgraceful of course, made even worse because many of the ‘prisoners’ were innocent farms.
Torture, the killing of innocents and the waste of lives and money have become a natural consequence of modern war which never seem to have an honest purpose and it’s about fucking time it stopped.
