Talk about a “delicious” irony, writes Ethan Epstein. It’s health problem whack-a-mole: after one nasty habit is significantly reduced by the government, a different one pops up nearby. After thirty plus years of attempting to legislate smokers out of existence, the federal government now has to face an even starker – and more horrifying! – reality: people enjoy eating fatty foods.
What’s more, Americans have not only gotten heavier, but, after decades of falling smoking rates, they’re lighting up more. This all points to the futility of trying to legislate individual choices. Not that the “health and safety” crowd won’t keep trying.
